No Power, No Cable, No Problem

You know, there are a few bright spots on the dim horizon of climate change. After a night of no electricity, and a basement smelling of foul rainwater, and hours of bailing water from the basement stairwell with a bucket, I must tell myself something to keep from feeling like the world is coming to some kind of awful apocalyptic ending. I mean, we have had weeks of crazy weather, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and rain pouring down like monsoons from hell.

After the power went out last night, I took the solar lights from the backyard and lit the living room quite nicely. My partner A. and I rested on the couch from the hours of bailing, and we were forced to eat the ice cream, since the freezer was out, before it melted. It was nice to talk in the dark, no noise from MSNBC, or CNN, or the Internet, just the sounds of the storm, and flashes of distant lightening.

Today when I got home from work, I built a little dam in front of the stairwell, and tied a tarp over the opening to try and divert the water from the basement. At the local hardware store, there was a line of people trying to rent water pumps, and purchasing de-humidifiers. There are more severe storms coming tonight, and my dam might work, but if we get another tornado, the tarp will most likely be blown all the way to Kansas, and I might spend another night sitting in the quiet, eating melting ice cream, and listening to nothing, which is just fine by me.

I get the feeling that the changes in climate are irreversible, and the storms are coming, and there is really no way to avoid it, it doesn't matter what Congress does now, the deluge is coming, the wind is coming, the drought is coming, it's all coming.

Buy some solar lights, build a dam, and enjoy the silence.

Oh and make sure you have ice cream in the freezer.
