Thinking about the nuclear option

Remember the nuclear option? The Republican threat to kill filibusters by Democrats by means other than a cloture vote (requires a two-thirds majority, or 66 votes)? An approach that would permit the majority to cut off debate with only 51 votes - remember?

I'm thinking we should use that to pass climate change legislation - what do you think?

Today, the Senate voted on a cloture motion and failed to get the needed 66 votes. There were only 48 votes to close the debate - Obama and Clinton missed the vote (regrettable), as did Kennedy and Byrd (understandable). Means we won't be able to move the climate legislation forward.

To see how your Senators voted, look here.

Made me think of Randy Newman's "Let's Drop the Big One Now." Enjoy the weekend!
