Why McCain Will Lose

Friends worry that America isn't ready for a black man as President. The last two months of the Democratic race threw them into a gloomy mood. How about you? Are you worried?

With the economy in the tank, gas prices draining our wallets, and our troops stuck in Iraq, conditions are very poor for the party that holds the White House. Bush is intensely unpopular and McCain has spent the last four years reinventing himself as Bush's heir apparent - embracing Bush's war and all his policies, except for torture.

McCain's appeal to swing voters was his authenticity - his straight-talk. If anything is clear by now it is that the McCain of 2004 is not running in 2008. Everything we ever liked about the man has been scraped away and replaced with stuff that we all hate about Bush.

The 2008 version of John McCain is old, incoherent and discredited. By November, we are going to feel sorry for the guy.

I can't wait.
