Obama Fundraising Numbers

I just received an e-mail from the Obama people announcing their June total of $52 million, with the average donation only $68. I had heard forecasts of $20 million just a couple of weeks ago, with some suggestions that Obama might have overplayed his hand in disdaining public financing.

With numbers like these, Obama may be able to silence some of the critics. More importantly, he may be driving a stake into the heart of the Republican political machine, which has always been about fatcats and deep pockets. If Obama can neutralize the funding advantages that have fueled Republican political power for the past 25 years, why is it hard to believe that more substantive policy changes are within our grasp?
