I Hate To Say I Told You So

Remember when I asked Why Are Dems So Stupid In Election Years? For those of you who thought I was out in right field on what I had to say in this article, I give you the recent Repubo victory in the California special election to replace fallen congressman Duke Cunningham.

As you may or may not know, the election was won by Repubo Brian Bilbray over Dem Francine Busby. Wait, wait, I know, I know. Many of you are thinking - well of course Bilbray won. That California district is heavily Republican. He SHOULD have won.

I disagree.

In my honest opinion, I feel the Democrats dropped the ball. They took what could have been an easy win and turned the seat over to the Republicans by siding with George W. Bush on the immigration issue. Had Busby stated it was necessary to first secure the border before augmenting a plan concerning the illegals already in this country, she probably would have won the special election hands down. Unfortunately, her rhetoric made it sound like she supported the illegals in their quest for citizenship.

Basically, she made it an amnesty vs. secure border argument with Bilbray and the Repubo eeked out a narrow victory, even with a third party candidate who also ran on the secure border platform taking votes from him. He even picked up support from one of the Democratic mayors in his area.

Dems will not retake the House (let alone the Senate) if they appear to support Bush's amnesty legislation. The Repubos WILL use it against them, and as strongly as Bilbray used it against Busby. He had no concerns in calling Bush wrong on the issue and neither will Karl Rove.
