Katrina Aftermath - So Many Happy People

Five short days after Katrina struck, the world was still waiting for the Bush administration to step in and begin saving lives in NOLA. The two Michael's (FEMA/Homeland Security chiefs) were waking up, startled, asking, "Hurricane?? What Hurricane?? Where?? You say!!" With that, BushCo started the machinery grinding slowly to meet the challenges of an unparalleled disaster along America's Gulf Coast.

First on it's order of business was to signal Halliburton to get ready to reap multi-million dollar profits. Last July (How far in advance can you really predict hurricanes, anyway), Halliburton Subsidiary Kellogg, Brown, and Root Services Inc. won a competitive bid to provide debris removal and do emergency work associated with natural disasters.

Oh, and for anyone who's keeping score (and you should be with Congressional elections coming up in 2006) here are the names of the Congressfolk who voted AGAINST sending an aid package to Katrina victims:

  • Rep. Joe Barton - TX
  • Jeff Flake - AZ
  • Virginia Foxx - NC
  • Scott Garrett - NJ
  • John Hostettler - IN
  • Steve King - IA
  • Butch Otter - ID
  • Ron Paul - TX
  • James Sensenbrenner - WI
  • Tom Tancredo - CO
  • Lynn Westmoreland - GA

Guess what. They're all Republicans. Who woulda thunk it??

Bushie, of course, is having to be restrained by Cheney and Rove from pulling an aircraft carrier into the Gulf from which he can give his "Mission Accomplished Katrina" speech.

Aside from Halliburton, American credit card companies, financial service companies and the banking industry are gleefully dancing in the streets because they realize that the newly passed Bankruptcy Reform Bill will stop many Katrina victims from seeking relief in the form of bankruptcy. That's right folks, all those homeless, jobless, people who got out of NOLA with only their lives intact can now look forward to having the blood sucking credit card companies come knocking to dun them the minute they can find them. The bill takes effect in October.

As you sit there thinking about who the US is going to pay for the cleanup of Katrina, especially with the drain on tax money still coming from Iraq, consider that your congress is about to vote on eliminating the estate tax, which will save the very wealthy considerable funds which will no longer be available to help pay for future emergencies like Katrina or a terrorist attack. Also consider that the Bush still wants to make his tax cuts for the rich permanent. They've already sent millions of dollars back to America's wealthiest 1% - and that money is now unavailable for bolstering Katrina's victims.

This is life in BushWorld, folks. This is what you voted into office last year. Be happy, be joyful, and be prepared to pay through your nose for your mistake.

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
