Shelter from the StormThere was almost no way to miss the Katrina live aid program "Shelter from the Storm" last night, was there? I didn't even know it was happening until I turned on the TV - we were going to start watching the fourth season of Six Feet Under, which is now on DVD - and there was Randy Newman to break my heart singing about the 1927 Mississippi flood. The whole evening was a heart-breaker, several of the Big Names asking for donations in between the musical numbers sounded as though they were struggling to fend off tears. G and I didn't even try to fend them off - a strange evening of dancing and crying took place in our living room during that hour. Bono and Mary J. Blige blew me away, but it was the Foo Fighters that really kicked ass with the old swamp-rock CCR number, Born on the Bayou. Garth Brooks paid some good dues to CCR as well. Paul Simon, Neil Young, Dr. John, the old geezers of my era, were wonderful to see and hear. It was a mournful/soulful/rocking/praising, very American hour, and I can only hope it raised a ton of money from those watching for those who no longer have TV sets, couches and living rooms, as Jack Black said last night.| +Save/Share | | |
