Sucker's Bet, Anyone?I'm getting a little tired of words, and don't somehow have access to many of my own at present. It all seems puny and futile in the face of everything that's happening. Yet I appreciate the words of those in whom I believe, like Tom Engelhardt who writes the blog TomDispatch, and who has saved me from baking my head, quite a few times. And like the guy whom Tom is showcasing today in his blog, Bill McKibben. McKibben wrote a heartbreaking book a while back called The End of Nature. His most recent one has a more upbeat title: Wandering Home, A Long Walk Across America's Most Hopeful Landscape. This McKibben piece is about the whole enchilada, from planet New Orleans to planet Earth, the future in which we all may become environmental refugees: "Sucker's Bets for the New Century, The U.S. after Katrina." Yep. It is, you guessed it. About climate change, and its long-term consequences. | +Save/Share | | |
