ID equivalent to Astrology

Intelligent Design is nothing more than a religious or supernatural explanation of natural phenomena. Science is essentially the search for natural explanations of the events and observed reality of the natural world. Intelligent design is not science, but anti-science -- the rejection of a scientific mode of thought, inquiry, experimentation, refutation and validation.

We cannot refute or prove ID, any more than we can refute or prove the existence or character of a deity. The essence of science is missing from ID for a good reason -- it is simply not science.

Today, the Dover PA school board presented its first expert witness, a biochemist and professor at Lehigh University, Michael Behe. Behe supports the teaching of ID, but admits it is not really all that different from astrology. I suppose he supports teaching that too.

As if our kids aren't already far behind the rest of the world in science education...

Funny thing is, at least astrology attempts to explain and predict events by reference to observable natural conditions, such as the alignment of the planets and seasonal changes in the night sky. In that sense, astrology is better science than ID, and Nancy Reagan is a better scientist than Mr Behe..

Check out the article in The NY Times. Here's an excerpt:

HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 18 - A leading architect of the intelligent-design movement defended his ideas in a federal courtroom on Tuesday and acknowledged that under his definition of a scientific theory, astrology would fit as neatly as intelligent design....

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
