Lowered Expectations

I sort of figured that I would be celebrating today, I thought that I would feel a sort of satisfaction that those people in high places, those people who lied to the American Public and the law enforcement officials would be held to account for the untruths. At least one, Scooter Libby has, and no one knows whether the other players will, at least two of them made deals, and what I think will happen next, is that Libby will take the fall for his boss and the rest of them, and we will not get the full story until such a time as when people feel safe enough to come out with the truth. That may take years, and in the meantime what we have on our plates is perjury, false statements, and obstruction of justice.

It's a little like expecting the Grand Slam Breakfast at Denny's, and instead getting granola, yogurt, and a piece of parsley.

The bottle of Lemoncello remains in the freezer, there was no celebrating in Washington tonight. I spent the day putting insulation in the attic, and now I feel scratchy and irritated.

I was wrong to expect that we would learn the truth about the lies that led us to war, I wanted the perpetrators of this horrendous deed to account for what they did, and the lives it cost. But as Patrick Fitzgerald himself said today, if you wanted vindication for the war, you won't get it from his investigation. And there may be no other investigation that will explain how and why we are there. An investigation in Italy will play out in the US much like the Downing Street Memo did, a lot of interest on the Internet, and not much play with the American public.

I'm saving the lemoncello for a day when we can really celebrate, when some sort of stability is found in Iraq, and our children can come home. I should probably have chosen something that will age nicely, because I think that peace will be a long time coming.

FEATURED QUOTE

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."

-- Cecil Day-Lewis from Where Are The War Poets?
