Constitutional Privacy Amendment

Every now and again someone comes up with a REALLY good idea. A tip of the turban to Dan Savage of the small Seattle newspaper, The Stranger, for coming up with a real heart stopper of an idea.

Dan says:

If the Republicans can propose a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, why can't the Democrats propose a right to privacy amendment? Making this implicit right explicit would forever end the debate about whether there is a right to privacy. And the debate over the bill would force Republicans who opposed it to explain why they don't think Americans deserve a right to privacy - which would alienate not only moderates, but also those libertarian, small-government conservatives who survive only in isolated pockets on the Eastern Seaboard and the American West.

Talk about an idea whose time has come. If the right to privacy were spelled out in the Constitution once and for all there would no longer be any whispering and snarking about what is and what is not covered by it. First graders could read and discuss it during recess.

If Democrats were to propose such an amendment, think about the press we'd get! It's not a bill seeking to take away people's rights like Bush's gay marriage ban, but a true AMERICAN constitutional amendment spelling out the rights of the people. What a boon to the party!

So let's get the grass roots going here. It's time to email this to everyone you know. Email it to your senators and representatives. To your elected state officials too. Get people talking about and supporting this. This CAN be and SHOULD be done!

Come on peeps! Go for it!

No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
