Freedom's March Madness

The march of freedom continues. How do you like it so far?

We have a President who asserts his right to listen to our phone calls, to read our e-mail, to inspect our library records, to arrest and indefinitely detain us, to hide us from the Red Cross and prevent us from seeking legal counsel, to remove us to countries that engage in torture, and to torture us, if he sees fit.

He sent our brave and dutiful Troops to invade Iraq - claiming that our unprecedented preventive war was justified by "intelligence" he knew or should have known to be highly questionable and unreliable. He cast aside the Geneva Conventions and laws prohibiting torture. And he is preparing to turn Iraq over to war lords and mullahs.

All in the name of freedom, and the defense of democracy.

Meanwhile, at home, new restrictions on the private choices and personal lives of Americans are being pressed by the President and his party. Abortion, gay marriage, physician-assisted suicide, medical use of marijuana, access to "day-after" contraception - all are under attack by people whose religious beliefs are offended by the private choices of others.

A majority of Americans favors the right of a woman to choose an abortion, but the House and Senate are gerrymandered to do the will of a conservative minority.

So much for freedom and democracy.

Was it only a year ago that we were subjected to his second inaugural -- a speech larded with meaningless rhetoric about freedom and democracy?

Here we are one year later, and we are not shocked. We are not outraged. We go about business as usual. As brave men and women sacrifice their lives in Iraq, we hardly notice that the freedoms they believe they are fighting to preserve are being stolen from us day by day.

The real fight is not in Baghdad. It is here, and it has not yet begun.

Are you ready to fight?

FEATURED QUOTE

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."

-- Cecil Day-Lewis from Where Are The War Poets?
