Bush and Congressional Republicans encourage proliferation of highly enriched uranium

You know, the stuff they want us to go to war with Iran over. Check out Bomb-grade bazaar: How industry, lobbyists, and Congress weakened export controls on highly enriched uranium by Alan Kuperman Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists March/April 2006.

It's about legislation that the Republican Congress passed last year and Bush signed into law in August that loosens restrictions on US export of highly enriched uranium (HEU), significantly increasing the chances that Al Qaeda or some other terrorist group will get the key ingredients to construct a primitive nuclear weapon. This is why I just don't take seriously the Iraq hawks' hype about how we have to stop this deadly menace while Bush and the Republicans are passing legislation to make it easier for terrorists to get HEU. Kuperman writes:

The individuals responsible for this legislative debacle comprise a sweeping cast of characters, including foreign producers of medical isotopes, their U.S.-based lobbyists, gullible sectors of the American medical community, and the compliant lawmakers who spearheaded efforts on Capitol Hill. It is a cautionary tale of how a single foreign company can weaken U.S. national security through misleading scare tactics and cold cash.

And willing support from the Bush administration and the Republican Congress who happily put corporate greed ahead of nuclear nonproliferation, except when they decide to use it as an excuse to attack some country that's in their crosshairs.
