Pro-choice groups in South Dakota are mounting a petition drive to get the issue on the state ballot this year.

The decision to take abortion to the ballot box this fall ensures a barrage of political advertising to sway South Dakotans who will vote on the issue.

While advocates on both sides expressed hope that residents here would be allowed to settle the issue on their own terms, analysts expect millions of dollars from outside sources to pour into the state because of the matter's national importance.

That became inevitable Friday, when opponents of legislation banning most abortions in the state announced a petition drive to challenge the new law in the Nov. 7 general election. If they succeed in gathering 16,728 valid signatures by June 19, the political ads will follow, a prospect that divides voters much as abortion itself.
