The GOP Goes Back to the Well...Again

Oh, joy. The first story to greet my sleepy eyes this morning was this in The New York Times:

Call for Censure Is Rallying Cry to Bush's Base

By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK

WASHINGTON, March 15 — Republicans, worried that their conservative base lacks motivation to turn out for the fall elections, have found a new rallying cry in the dreams of liberals about censuring or impeaching President Bush.

The proposal this week by Senator Russell D. Feingold, Democrat of Wisconsin, to censure Mr. Bush over his domestic eavesdropping program cheered the left. But it also dovetailed with conservatives' plans to harness such attacks to their own ends.
My first thought was, "This cannot be happening. The Republicans cannot be making hay out of the first courageous noises to come out of the Democratic Party in almost a decade." My second thought was, "What am I thinking… Of course they can. And will. "

They will trumpet the same rallying cry they dig out every time the left shows any sign of life at all:

"This is not about getting things done… This is raw partisan politics."
What, suddenly "impeachment" is the ultimate dirty word to the GOP? A treasonous failure of the evil "lib’ruls" to support our Commander-in-chief in wartime? "Raw partisan politics?" Hmmmm…eight years ago, impeachment was a noble, non-partisan crusade, mounted by pure-hearted patriots, to restore dignity and morality to the Office of President.

So, this is the message the Republicans have for the voters: As long as Mr. Bush keeps his pecker in his pants, he has the God-given right to do anything---advance any personal agenda; torture, kill, attack, incarcerate or, at the very least, wiretap, anyone who stands in his way.

As long as the wrong mouth does not encircle the presidential genitalia, he has carte blanche to pilot the ship of state wherever he pleases. And when he runs it up on the rocks, we are to stand behind him and patriotically look the other way. Lest we give the entire world the impression that we don’t look upon our Chief Executive as second only (slightly) to the Messiah.

Jesus loves a monogamous megalomaniac murderer.

"Impeachment, coming your way if there are changes in who controls the House eight months from now," Paul Weyrich, a veteran conservative organizer, declared last month in an e-mail newsletter.

The threat of impeachment, Mr. Weyrich suggested, was one of the only factors that could inspire the Republican Party's demoralized base to go to the polls. With "impeachment on the horizon," he wrote, "maybe, just maybe, conservatives would not stay at home after all."
But, I don’t know, folks. With the administration’s approval numbers as deep in the toilet, and sinking rapidly, as they are, is there enough of a "conservative base" intact for us lefties to worry about? Can the GOP promise enough "Godly" legistlation to the holy rollers to keep the Democrats from flushing? If I were the GOP, I wouldn’t count on it…
