It runs in the family, I guess

The St. Petersburg Times editorializes today about the problems in Brother Jeb's education program in Florida: Jebucation 03/05/06. This is an example of one of their concern's about Brother Jeb's approach to education:

Bush wants high school students to select majors, much like university students. But he has yet to identify the money necessary to expand alternative programs, such as vocational and technical education, and to hire additional guidance counselors. His changes in course requirements would also leave students with few options to explore electives.

Impose requirements that sound good but don't fund them. Kind of like the "No Child Left Behind" legislation his big brother got enacted.

Speaking of Dubya, it seems that Brother Jeb shares some of his management style:

This amounts to Jebucation, and it often thrives on the opposition of those it serves. The governor surrounds himself with people of similar views and then brands critics as enemies of change. In his final year in office, though, even some supporters are growing weary with his constant meddling. ...

For Bush, the 2006 Legislature is as much about his own resume as it is about the success of Florida's 2.7-million schoolchildren. He has even raised $897,000 to seed a foundation that will track his education reforms once he leaves office. Maybe once he leaves office, he'll be fighting the education establishment again. (my emphasis)

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
