Say goodbye to RedFrom an editorial in today's NY Times:Iraq is becoming a country that America should be ashamed to support, let alone occupy. The nation as a whole is sliding closer to open civil war. In its capital, thugs kidnap and torture innocent civilians with impunity, then murder them for their religious beliefs. The rights of women are evaporating. No matter how bad things get in Iraq, I am no longer surprised. Are you? If Bush wanted to make things worse, it is hard to imagine how he could (and I don't mean to misunderestimate the man). The Senate is considering Russ Feingold's proposal to censure the President, for his unlawful surveillance of our phone calls. If America made any sense at all, the Senate would be considering impeachment -- not merely for the illegal surveillance, but for the disastrous and immoral war in Iraq. In an America that made sense, the President would already have resigned. He has neither the integrity nor the motivation (potential impeachment) to do so. We live in a red-state America, where Wyoming gets as many Senators as California, and a minority of Americans and a few friends of Tom DeLay can control the government. We live in a red-state America, in which a blowjob leads to impeachment, but illegal surveillance, torture, and ruinous wars of aggression are not deemed worthy of censure. We live in a red-state America, but it won't be red much longer. Such incoherence, incompetence and corruption cannot be sustained. Red is on its way out. | +Save/Share | | |
