Time Out

This post is by way of letting folks know that I will be taking a blogging leave of absence for about the next six to seven weeks. Life converges from every direction, and it's all good, baby, but it's all overwhelming. Something has got to give, and even though it's one of my favorite parts of life, it's gonna be blogging. We are, as I'm sure you're sick of hearing, in the midst of a megamove across the country, a move entailing many changes in every part of our lives: habitat, work, possessions. A lot of what we're doing is directed toward better being able to live what I preach, live in a way that uses less energy and works with the environment.

I've actually done very little environmental blogging in the past several weeks, so you'll most likely do way better with the links I'm going to leave you. There is so much good environmental writing all over the internet, in blogs, magazines, activist groups, legal groups, that there is no way to do justice to even a small percentage of what's out there. So, I'll start with a few of my favorite links, and perhaps duck in from time to time to update with more.

I'll start with Sustainablog, "dedicated to news, information and personal meanderings related to environmental and economic sustainability, green and sustainable business, and environmental politics." Another of the essential green blogs is Treehugger, a group whose motto is "The future is green. Find it here."

If I could only offer one link, it would probably be Grist Magazine, because they do it all. Environmental news and commentary, with a sense of humor. Everything you need to know about what's going on in the green world will show up here in one of the features, columns, commentaries, or in their blog, Gristmill.

Environmental Action was founded after the first Earth Day, and their mission remains the same now as it was then: "to deliver impassioned, results-oriented activism that protects our environment from special interest polluters and their allies in government." There is also an Environmental Action Blog, worth keeping an eye on.

The indispensible League of Conservation Voters is the political voice of the national environmental movement and the only organization devoted full-time to shaping a pro-environment Congress and White House. Check their scorecard to find out how your congress members are voting, and to see which candidates they are backing as we move toward the November elections.

Back in October 2005 The American Prospect Magazine published a special report called The Environment: Death and Rebirth. This issue is full of articles that will take you, as they are me, quite some time to truly absorb. This adjunct site has readings, links, references, to more info on every subject covered in the report. It's a boatload of homework, and worth all the time you can give it.

Last, for now, but certain far from least, Howling at a Waning Moon. "Tracking the Bush Administration’s assault on the environment, our health, and our childrens’ quality of life." Howling doesn't only bring us the bad news, though. If you read it consistently, there's nuggets of hope and light.

A tiny slice of green cyberspace then, but one link always leads to another. Check out the Environmental Links in our sidebar, and the many other green blogs in the blogroll. There are blogs on climate science, peak oil, green building, sustainable living, alternative energy, permaculture...a cornucopia of thought, innovation, political action, and dreams. I can't ignore this world for too long, so I will try to keep up with some reading, commenting here and there, and the good lord willin' and the creek don't rise, be back with my fellow Blue Voices well before the Summer Solstice.

FEATURED QUOTE

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."

-- Cecil Day-Lewis from Where Are The War Poets?
