Play It Again, Uncle Sam

Are you ready for it? The most important debate in the Senate is about to resume on June 5th - the Federal Marriage Amendment. It's more important than immigration, more important than border security, more important than a national health plan for America's citizens. Terrorist attacks, the War in Iraq, World Hunger, and even the buying off of Congress by lobbyists, pale in comparison to protecting the sanctity and godliness of heterosexual marriage. This debate sinks to the very roots of what makes America a great country - bigotry, hate and outright lies.

Huh?? Well it is the ONLY thing that the Religious Right is concerned about at any rate. Well, mayhaps not the only thing - they are also concerned that watching or reading The Da Vinci Code will bring organized religion to rack and ruin almost as quickly as two lesbians getting married.

Either way, to protect America against the breadth of the heathen element in our midst, the Righteous among us have designated Sunday, June 4th as "Marriage Protection Sunday" again.

The American Family ASSociation has lifted the clarion call on their web site to assemble all Americans who fear gays and lesbians and desire to keep them in their roll as second-class citizens, beholden to real people who understand the values that marriage brings to families in America today.

Frankly, I think this attempt by the First Self-Righteous Church will succeed at about the same rate that it will stop people from seeing The Da Vinci Code, which is like only going to happen in their dreams.

Arizona is a Red State. As Red as it can get. But today in the Arizona Republic, you find this letter to the Editor:

Is This What We Pay Them For?

Congress has its work cut out for it: The Gulf Coast is still a shambles from Hurricane Katrina, and the new hurricane season is almost here. Our land is threatened by terrorists, but 95% of cargo containers entering the United States go unexamined. Our oil addiction is causing grave political, economic and environmental problems, yet we still have no coherent energy policy to address it.

And Congress is hard at work defending us from the twin threats of gay marriage and the Spanish language. And your taxes and mine are paying for it.

- Marian Weaver, Bisbee.

Sorry Right Wing Wackos. I don't think it's going to work for you this time. Too many Ms. Weavers out there, now, who understand what you are.

FEATURED QUOTE

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."

-- Cecil Day-Lewis from Where Are The War Poets?
