The Right Way to Export Democracy

I never really bought into the idea of using armed Marines to force regime change and bring about the birth of democracy in the Middle East. If I were an Iraqi, and some 20 year old with a crew cut was pointing an M-16 at my head and telling me that he was here to liberate me, I would probably attempt to kick him in the nuts and run as fast as I could in some other direction.

But some really exciting things are happening in the MidEast.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. has awarded franchise rights to a Kuwaiti restaurant company, the Americana Group.
Under the agreement, Americana Group is to open 100 Krispy Kreme (NYSE: KKD) locations in Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other locations in the region.

The first location is scheduled to open in Kuwait this fall.
According to its Web site, the Americana Group operates some 650 restaurants in 11 Middle Eastern countries. Its other brands include well-known U.S. brands such as KFC, Hardees and Pizza Hut. The company has more than $1 billion in annual sales.

One bite of a Krispy Kreme donut (especially if it's hot) will make those jihadis think twice about paradise, who needs forty virgins when you can have a dozen glazed donuts? And how about some extra spicey chicken wings? What America needs is to export is our expertise in junk food, it will win millions of hearts and minds, and make many more friends than the marines with those big guns. You want fries with that shake? Just hand over your IED's, and we'll give you a taste of paradise on earth.

Don't forget the honey barbecue sauce.

No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
