Just When You Think Things Can't get Worse

It's day four now of sitting around the house with my knee propped up on the couch. I'm bored to tears, I've watched every episode of "Gilmore Girls", and even though I think that Lorelai Gilmore is the perfect human being, her and Rory are beginning to get on my nerves. They talk so fast, that in my haze of pain-killers, I often have to rewind to get the joke. And they keep falling for these loser guys, they have this cycle of meet loser, fall in love with loser, break up with loser, meet the next loser. My life on the couch is also a cycle, watch Gilmore girls, eat pepperoni pizza, take handfuls of advil, ice knee, and then the cycle begins again. In between, I sometimes hobble up a flight of stairs to the loo, and on my last trip, I dropped the phone down the stairs, and the battery flew underneath the couch, so now, I can't even call for more pizza. It's probably just as well, because all of this sitting around not burning any calories is really bad. I can almost hear the fat cells storing themselves in various parts of my body.

I finished all five seasons of the Gilmore Girls, so I turned on CNN. Of course Washington is still all abuzz about the vacant CIA spot, but they're also talking about the guy slotted to replace Porter Goss. You always think that things are as bad as they can get, and when that happens, the President picks Gen. Michael V. Hayden to replace Porter Goss at the CIA. Now, I'm not totally paranoid, and you might think that a person who has spent the last three days watching the first five seasons of the Gilmore Girls has no place weighing in on the President's choice to head the CIA, but holy shit people, this is the guy who did the bidding of the men who told him to wiretap Americans without a warrant. In the name of National Security, this man broke the law, and I would bet that he'd do it again. Once you cross that line, it might not be so hard to do it again, and these DOD guys see a threat to national security as soon as they get up in the morning.

Do we really want a guy who's associated with the DOD, in charge of an agency that's supposed to give us facts, even if they don't support the war plan? We won't need some forged documents from questionable sources once a man who has already violated the Constitution is sending daily reports to Bush and Cheney. If a guy who is sworn to uphold the Constitution has already broken his vow, then we don't need him responsible for the information that the nation relies on for our security.

And we don't want a guy with questionable morals in charge of those black operations, the ones we won't see, all tightly classified and stuck someplace that the sun won't shine ever.

Oh wait it's time for more ice, and some more pain medication. Ahhh...

If the world were like Stars Hollow, the Land of the Gilmores, it might be easier to sit on the couch with my knee propped while the world burns around us. It might be easy to trust our elected officials to stop the confirmation, but I think a little help from constituents would make me feel better. I would be e-mailing mine right now, but I live in the Capital, yes, the nation's Capital, the land of taxation without representation, and I don't have an elected official.

Do you all mind making that phone call? I would if I could, but I can't, and it's Tuesday, and there's an all new episode of the Gilmore Girls.

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
