Who Will Be Accountable?"I think the press and television are also to be blamed for the absence of debate [prior to the invasion of Iraq]. Editorial pages of our most distinguished newspapers were shamefully - and incredibly - oblivious to the drastic significance of the shift to preventive war as the basis of American foreign policy."--Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. It's just great that all of these wise men are coming out with these heartfelt mea culpas. Admitting you were wrong is something difficult, and it takes a lot of courage when popular opinion is stacked against you. To come out and admit a mistake when the majority of Americans already know you have made an error in judgment is chicken shit. For the press to admit to a dereliction of duty now is no act of courage, it is a cowardly attempt to fall onto the moral side of history, and for the New York Times, it's too little too late. For Thomas Friedman and Fareed Zakaria to reverse their positions now is pathetic. The lust for battle that was drummed up in the press before the war has resulted in not only the deaths of American soldiers, but it has shamed America. The agents of propaganda for the Administration now find themselves on the wrong side of history, but for all of the bloodshed that they have enabled, there is no jail time, they still appear on the Sunday talk shows, collect the bloated paychecks. It's not enough for the advocates of war to admit that they were wrong. They never pulled the trigger, they never dropped the bombs. They pounded the drums for war, and never gave us a viable argument to stop the slaughter. Cancel your subscription to the New York Times, and tune into alternative news.
