Worst. President. Ever.

Via Political Wire, the latest Quinnipiac Poll:

Strong Democratic sentiment pushes President George W. Bush to the top of the list when American voters pick the worst U.S. President in the last 61 years. Bush is named by 34 percent of voters, followed by Richard Nixon at 17 percent and Bill Clinton at 16 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. Leading the list for best President since 1945 is Ronald Reagan with 28 percent, and Clinton with 25 percent.

[...]

American voters disapprove 58 - 35 percent of the job Bush is doing, compared to 58 - 36 percent in a March 2 survey. Even voters in red states, where Bush's margin was more than 5 percent in 2004, disapprove 52 - 39 percent.
Memo to Chris Matthews: With poll after poll showing the majority of us long past being amused with George Bush, isn't it time you call them minority loyal Dubya bootlickers the new whackos?

Now what's even more interesting about this poll is its relevance to this year's midterm elections.

Larry Sabato says one or more of these factors make for a midterm earthquake:

  • Exceptional presidential poll ratings (either unusually low or high)
  • Foreign war (popular or unpopular)
  • Sour economy
  • Major scandal
  • Intense hot-button social, domestic issues

Of all these factors, he points to presidential popularity as the most significant. He concludes:

With five months to go before November, can every piece of this analysis be transformed? It's certainly possible, but it's also not very likely. The problems bedeviling Bush and the GOP may get a bit better or a little worse, b ut they appear to be intrinsic to this election year. Therefore, the only real question is how many seats the Democrats will gain in the Congress and the statehouses, not if they will gain.
    The Republicans are toast.

    Come senators, congressmen
    Please heed the call
    Don't stand in the doorway
    Don't block up the hall
    For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
    There's a battle outside
    And it is ragin'.
    It'll soon shake your windows
    And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.
