A Damned Good Idea x16

If you read enough news, sooner or later you come across a good idea.

Out in Nashville, Tennessee, a group called Soulforce has found a way to fight Senator Bill Frist and his big-moneyed anti-gay conservative Xtian friends who are trying to force the Federal Marriage Amendment down the throats of the American public.

Right there in Nashville, home town of Senator Silly Billy, Soulforce has purchased 16 billboards around the city to remind citizens of the words of Coretta Scott King, widow of the Reverend Martin Luther King, concerning gay marriage:

"Gay and lesbian people have families, and their families should have legal protections, whether by marriage or civil union. A constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages is a form of gay bashing, and it would do nothing at all to protect traditional marriages."
The quote comes from Mrs. King's speech given at Richard Stockton College in New Jersey in 2004. The late Reverend King's wife has long been a strong advocate and voice of gay rights. Reminding Tennesseeans of her words will help people to think twice before heading down a shameful, bigoted road with their Senator. They will be reminded that equality in America means EVERYONE.

Frist's Federal Marriage Amendment would keep same-sex couples from getting any kind of marriage rights and prohibit states and local courts from granting marriage rights to same-sex couples, as happened in Massachusetts. It would void same-sex couples' legal marriages, and some observers even speculate that it could eliminate civil unions and domestic partnerships.

Think of those Massachusetts couples who've been married for over two years. Imagine receiving a notice in the mail that your marriage has been voided by the Constitution of the United States. It won't come to that because the FMA won't see the light of day. But it gives you an idea of the mean-spirited thinking behind this bill.

I'd like to see billboards go up all over America!

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
