Disappearing IraqThe campaign to turn a blind eye to the failure in Iraq has begun. Frank Rich:But it’s the collapse of the one remaining (and unassailable) motivation that still might justify staying the course in Iraq — as a humanitarian mission on behalf of the Iraqi people — that is most revealing of what a moral catastrophe this misadventure has been for our country. The sad truth is that the war’s architects always cared more about their own grandiose political and ideological ambitions than they did about the Iraqis, and they communicated that indifference from the start to Iraqis and Americans alike.Iraq is a war that should never have happened; now it's collapsing under the weight of its own perverse reason for being. That we are now witnessing the dismemberment of a country is testimony to the insanity of the Bush administration's arrogant assumption that Iraq was ours for the taking. That it is unquestionably spiraling into chaos confirms that the war-hungry neoconservatives who pushed for the invasion barely gave a thought to its aftermath and the Iraqi people who would suffer the consequences. That Iraq is now reduced to a civil war bloodbath proves that the same neoconservatives who pushed for this unjustified war are incapable of finishing what they started and getting us out of it. | +Save/Share | | |
