Good News For ProgressivesI think the polls are showing that a Democratic take-over of the House is pretty much a done deal, but I wonder what good it will do the country if the Republicans continue to control the Senate. In such a scenario, the lack of progress that we see today might become exaggerated exponentially, with two opposing parties of the legislative branch proposing and killing laws that the country may need to have passed in order to bring progress to the nation.I was of the opinion that the mood in the country is anti-incumbent, but there are people who are much smarter than I who disagree. Stuart Rothenberg thinks that the mood of the country is anti-Bush, and if he is right, then maybe it's time for us to focus on some very close Senate races. The Republicans have a much smaller lead in the Senate, and I think there are some races that we can easily win. In Pennsylvania, it looks like Rick Santorum is out, although the guy's got more money than God. In Montana, Conrad Burns is crashing and burning. In Rhode Island, Lincoln Chaffee won the primary, but will most likely lose the election. That's 3. In Virginia, George Allen has a mere 2 point lead in the latest polls. In Ohio, it looks like Sherrod Brown is climbing ahead. In Missouri, Claire McCaskill holds a 1 point lead. That's 6. In this dangerous imbalance of power that holds the nation, we must have a decisive Democratic victory this November. The fact that that may be possible is great news for progressives. | +Save/Share | | |
