Rumsfeld Under Fire

Instead of taking a stance against war, the Democrats are sounding off against Donald Rumsfeld. As a person who is anti-war, I hear the Democrats saying that it was okay for us to go to war for trumped up reasons, and invade a sovereign nation that had never attacked us. The war is okay, but the way it is being waged is not. I hear the Democrats saying that they actually think that we can win this war if we just get someone competent to run it. The Senate Democrats get the same news and probably more than the average American, so the idea that the war is somehow salvageable makes me think that they're drinking the same Kool-Aid as Cheney and Bush.

They're right about Rumsfeld though.

Remember Afghanistan? That was Rumsfeld's first war, and although we have mostly forgotten it, things aren't really going so well over there.

The Taliban is gaining ground in Afghanistan due to ``misguided'' policies of the U.S.-led coalition and NATO that focus on fighting insurgents rather than combating poverty, a security and drugs policy analyst said.
U.S.- and U.K.-led counter-narcotic programs in Afghanistan to eradicate the cultivation of opium poppies, and ongoing military campaigns in the south, have accelerated the insurgency and led many Afghans to support the Taliban, the Senlis Council said today in a 217-page report.
``The Taliban has de facto military control of half of Afghanistan, as well as strong psychological control,'' Emmanuel Reinert, executive director of the council, told reporters in London. ``Because the Taliban is helping ordinary people, support for them is growing.''
We never finished the job in Afghanistan, which was where the real war was. The Taliban actually did harbor Osama, they were the enemy, they truly are Islamo-fascists. Instead of finishing off the Taliban and finding Bin Laden, we hastily installed a president, we left the war-lords intact, and we went on our merry way to transform the Middle East with Afghanistan as our model. It's not surprising that the war in Iraq has become a clusterfuck, it's just surprising that the Democrats think it can be fixed.

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
