An Interview with "Darwin's Rottweiler"The fourth in Salon.com's series of interviews about religion and science with today's leading thinkers, Atoms and Eden: Conversations about Science and Faith, has been posted there today. This is a series I've just discovered, and am reading my way through. Today's interview (The flying spaghetti monster) is with Richard Dawkins, in this country for a tour to publicize his latest book, The God Delusion. This book turns to his more recent passions. In it hefulminates against religious moderates as well as fundamentalists. He argues that the existence of God is itself a scientific conjecture, one that doesn't hold up to the evidence. And he dismisses the entire discipline of theology: I have yet to see any good reason to suppose that theology (as opposed to biblical history, literature, etc.) is a subject at all."The interviewer, Steve Paulson of Wisconsin Public Radio, spoke with Dawkins by phone in Oxford shortly before he launched his American book tour. They talked about "the dangers of unquestioned faith, the politics of the evolution debate, and why atheists are among the most intelligent people in the world." If you are not familiar with Dawkins controversial outspoken views, or his credentials for having them, this somewhat outdated piece in Wired Magazine will give you at least an introduction: Revolutionary Evolutionist. Here is a video interview in late September, with some similar questions and answers, from Newsnight: Newsnight video interview w/Dawkins on The God Delusion | +Save/Share | | |
