If You Go Out on the Ice Today, You Better Go In Disguise

My favorite news item of the day, oh okay, maybe I like the Newt Gingrich having an affair while he was leading the charge against Bill Clinton's Oval Office dalliance, almost as much...there are days when it's hard for a cynic to make up her mind about these things...is this one, "'Don't discuss polar bears": memo to scientists . Yes, it's official administration policy now:

Polar bears, sea ice and global warming are taboo subjects, at least in public, for some U.S. scientists attending meetings abroad, environmental groups and a top federal wildlife official said on Thursday.

Environmental activists called this scientific censorship, which they said was in line with the Bush administration's history of muzzling dissent over globalclimate change.
Polar bears are pretty iconic critters, and their extinction due to global warming is a hot button topic right now. It's one that is almost guaranteed to make even the most indifferent to global climate change among us sit up and take notice. So, we can't have it discussed in public, nosirree, get those TV cameras out of the room. Absolutely no big cute furry endangered white bears, not while the children are watching!.

The prohibition on talking about these subjects only applies to public, formal situations, Private scientific discussions outside the meeting and away from media are permitted and encouraged

FEATURED QUOTE

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."

-- Cecil Day-Lewis from Where Are The War Poets?
