Thompson Becoming DisappointingI’m no Fred Thompson fan, but it appears that he’s becoming the brightest light for Republican hopes in next year’s election. Thompson’s a good speaker – he sounds like presidential material. He’s serious and doesn’t carry the baggage of other Republican front-runners.What bothers me about him is his recent tendency toward fear rhetoric. After warning against a rising tide of fundamentalist radicals who are targeting America, Thompson cautioned that fundamentalists would like “nothing more than a mushroom cloud over an American city.” His stating that the United States faces a battle against the “forces of evil” is too reminiscent of the Bush rhetoric of the 2004 race. While such hawkish posturing might appeal to the pro-war leftovers, it is not what’s needed to make America safe. All it does is raise the specter of terror that the Republican Party uses so well against Democrats. Instead of telling Americans what Fred Thompson will do to make America safer (port safety and border security), all Thompson is doing is spreading more peanut butter of dread on top of the bread of voter insecurity. I think Americans are tired of this Republican snow job. I don’t believe it will win votes for Thompson, and will only align him with the likes of Bush, McCain, Romney and Giulani. To be honest, I’m disappointed. I thought Thompson would take a different tact, one more in tune with honest, hard-working Americans. He’s doing nothing more than supporting the greedy, buck-hungry defense contractors, exactly the way the current Administration has since 2001. Tags: Fred Thompson | +Save/Share | | |
