Arctic Action Day ReduxIn a preceding post: Political Footballs, I wrote of how our Republican Congress is taking the damage to the oil rigs, drilling platforms, and refineries in the Gulf as an opportunity to bring up drilling in the ANWR again. If the Gulf is so vulnerable, then we obviously need another place to get our oil, is their rationale. Read that post for more info, then, click on the bear and she will take you to the Arctic Refuge Action (a coalition formed by a large group of environmentalists) site, where you can read all about the planned action in Washington, DC on September 20th. This has been designated Arctic Action Day, and will include a gathering on the West Lawn of the US Capitol at 11 a.m., with speakers and musicians. After that, participants will go to their congresspeople's offices to discuss their opposition to the devastation of one of our last truly pristine wilderness areas. Talking points include the fact that the amount of oil in the ANWR is debatable, won't be available for at least ten years, that raising fuel-economy standards of cars and light trucks to 36 miles per gallon over the next decade would save at least three times as much oil as would flow from the refuge by 2020, and other you'll find on the site.If you are anywhere within a few hours of DC, and can get the time off from work, head on in this Tuesday, and take part in the action. The polar bears, caribou, musk oxen and tundra wildflowers will thank you. | +Save/Share | | |
