Shine On Harvest MoonReading environmental news, or any news for that matter, often plunges me into deep heartsickness and despair. I've been having a bad spell of heartsick despair recently, and the only antidote is to move away from the computer and out into the world of nature itself. As long as I am here, I will do what I can to protect, preserve, enjoy and love this astonishing planet. So we've been walking by the high pounding waves that the passage of Hurricane Ophelia has produced on our coast, and watching as the moon grows into its monthly fullness. We who live on this planet have the opportunity to see one of the season's loveliest sights tonight, when our moon appears on the horizon in its Harvest fullness. I say this often, but I will continue to do so - I think one of the reasons we so abuse the earth is that many now live far removed from the reality of the natural world. Tonight you can go outside and indulge in a little moon dance, as we approach the autumn equinox. Once upon a time we would have been holding festivals to celebrate the gathering of the crops, the settling in to winter, the light of the Mother Goddess appearing so close to us. An explanation of the illusion of closeness and a lovely little video can be found here, Why Harvest Moon Looms Large. | +Save/Share | | |
