Marcia Ellen's Twelve Days of Christmas

Christmas has been and always will be many things to many people. For many of us Christmas is a time for joy, peace and happiness. The stories I will present on a daily basis from December 25th through January 5th will attempt to show that Christmas, whether by myth or by miracle, has always accented the sacred in its celebration.

The celebration of Christmas as we know it started thousands of years before the birth of Christ and continues down to the present day in many forms. Of course it was not know as "Christmas" before the 4th century after Christ's birth but it has always celebrated the effort of God, if you please, to remind us we are not alone. (No matter if God bore the name of Marduk, Zeus, Jupiter, Mithera, Odin, The Great Spirit, YHWH, Goddess, Jesus or any of a myriad of other names or titles.) No matter if God came to us as one god or in the form of many gods and goddesses, this time of year has always honored the divine in many diverse forms of celebration.

I choose twelve different forms, twelve different stories, to present to you the varied forms the celebration of Christmas has taken on throughout history. There are many other voices I could have shared, enough stories to encompass every day of the entire year. I hope you enjoy the twelve I've written. If so, I will share twelve more with you next year. My hope is that you will realize that if someone says, "Merry Christmas" to you or "Happy Holidays," or "Happy Hanukkah," or even "Io Saturnalia," they are all wishing you the same exact thing - happiness during this most Holy of seasons.
