Light Up His World

Yesterday I posted a short piece, There'll Be a Change in the Weather, which was basically just a link to an article summarizing the year's climate change evidence and activity. I got a comment note on this post with a link which I followed up and discovered a guy with an intriguing idea. "Mr. Luna" is a science teacher on Long Island who has come up with a plan to help cut down global warming by decreasing output from coal-fired electrical plants. How he wants to do this is by getting as many readers as possible to write to Oprah and request that she help him give every child in America (PreK thru 12) one compact fluorescent lightbulb. CFLs are far more energy-efficient than incandescent lightbulbs, as I would hope most of my readers are aware.

So, on his site, Mr. Luna's Bright Idea, he's got Oprah's e-mail address and a template of an e-mail he'd like us to send her and get this ball rolling. This project started in November, so it's still in its infancy. Check it out, send the e-mail, let's see if we can do this! Even one CFL would help make each child's family aware that these bulbs are out there - no longer do you have to order them from Real Goods, they're in Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Ace Hardware, etc, for a reasonable price. Once people discover what they do for the household electric bill, they may put them in all their lamps and light fixtures. In our household it is exactly what we're doing - as every incandescent bulb burns out, we're replacing it with a CFL. Let's get Ken on the air with Oprah and reduce some of those emissions!
