The Rape of the Middle Class Continues

The State of the Union Address was what, 48 hours old yesterday? I can still hear King George's words echoing in my ears:

"We need to encourage children to take more math and science, and make sure
those courses are rigorous enough to compete with other nations. We have made a
good start in the early grades with the No Child Left Behind Act, which is
raising standards and lifting test scores across our country. Tonight I propose
to train 70,000 high school teachers to lead advanced-placement courses in math
and science; bring 30,000 math and science professionals to teach in classrooms;
and give early help to students who struggle with math, so they have a better
chance at good, high-wage jobs. If we ensure that America's children succeed in
life, they will ensure that America succeeds in the world. Preparing our nation
to compete in the world is a goal that all of us can share. I urge you to
support the American Competitiveness Initiative and together we will show the
world what the American people can achieve."
Wondrous stuff, eh?

Yesterday, the Republican controlled House passed a bill by TWO VOTES, count 'em, one - two, that cuts Medicaid and Medicare by millions, cuts funds for finding Dads who don't pay support for their children, and worst of all, cuts over three million dollars from student aid. This bill also passed the Senate, although the vote was tighter - ending in a tie. Our Vice President broke the tie with a "YES" vote and the bill now goes to President Bush who's already stated he will sign it into law as soon as it hits his desk.

This bill will increase the interest on Stafford College Loans from 4.7% to 6.8%. And if you get a loan to help your children defray college costs, your interest rate will rise from 6.1% to 8.5%. Now please tell me who gets left behind in this? What's the sense of strengthening the math and science skills of high school kids if they can't afford to continue on to college?

Bush also stated in his speech:

"We must also change how we power our automobiles. We will increase our research
in better batteries for hybrid and electric cars, and in pollution-free cars
that run on hydrogen. We will also fund additional research in cutting-edge
methods of producing ethanol, not just from corn but from wood chips, stalks or
switch grass. Our goal is to make this new kind of ethanol practical and
competitive within six years. Breakthroughs on this and other new technologies
will help us reach another great goal: to replace more than 75% of our oil
imports from the Middle East by 2025. By applying the talent and technology of
America, this country can dramatically improve our environment, move beyond a
petroleum-based economy and make our dependence on Middle Eastern oil a thing of
the past."

Again nice words.

But the reality is that plants that produce ethanol have had their budgets cut by as much as 13% lately. When asked about how this balances with the President's call for more funding for ethanol research, an Administration official remarked, "The use of ethanol was just an example given by President Bush. It wasn't a call to increase spending on ethanol research."

Bush also hyped the American Worker in his speech:

"And to keep America competitive, one commitment is necessary above all: We must
continue to lead the world in human talent and creativity. Our greatest
advantage in the world has always been our educated, hard-working, ambitious
people, and we are going to keep that edge."

Yet yesterday, President Bush appealed to congress to raise the cap on H-1b visas by 30,000 so foreign workers can then come to America and take high paying technology jobs. “We live in a competitive world. We want to be the leader in this world,” Bush said. Obviously it isn't enough to export high paying American jobs overseas, now we must import foreign workers who will take American jobs in this country at lower wages than their American counterparts. Bush says we don't have enough Americans qualified to fill these jobs. The truth is, we don't have American workers who will fill these jobs at the low wages employers are offering. And the solution is to bring in more foreign workers who WILL work for those lower wages.

Finally, Bush said this in his State of the Union Address:

"Because America needs more than a temporary expansion, we need more than
temporary tax relief. I urge the Congress to act responsibly, and make the tax
cuts permanent."

In that spending cuts bill that squeaked through both Houses by the slimiest of margins, there was not one cent taken away from Big Oil, the Pharmaceutical companies, or any other special interest group you care to name. Yet the House is today considering a bill that will grant another 180 BILLION tax dollars for Bush's war on terror. That money will be paid by cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. With zero dollars coming from taxes of the wealthy who could more afford to pay for this.

The new Republican leadership team in the U.S. House of Representatives vowed on Friday to make President George W. Bush's tax cuts permanent. But they didn't stop there. Further proposed cuts to Medicare spending are expected when President Bush releases his fiscal 2007 budget Monday, Republican and Democratic congressional aides said Friday.

There is only one way to stop this rape of the American Middle Class and the poor. Get the names of every Democrat and Republican who voted for those spending cuts yesterday and MAKE SURE THEY ARE NEVER ELECTED TO PUBLIC OFFICE AGAIN. Remove as many of these people from Congress in 2006 as possible. Otherwise, this will continue right through year 2008 and thereafter.

Bush IS a divider. But his greatest vision of division is the gap between the very rich and the poor. He is doing everything in his power to eliminate the Middle Class in this country, and he's winning.

That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
