Undercover Activists

If you don't know the organization PEER, it's time for a meet-up. PEER, Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, is a national non-profit alliance of local, state and federal scientists, law enforcement officers, land managers and other professionals dedicated to upholding environmental laws and values. It allows public servants to work as "anonymous activists" so that agencies must confront the message, rather than the messenger.

In other words, it's there to protect whistleblowers in the agencies that are supposed to be the guardians and managers of our national lands, parks, natural resources, the agencies that make policy and deal with issues of environmental concern to their employees and the public interest. The group's objectives are these:
  • Organize a broad base of support among employees within local, state and federal resource management agencies.
  • Monitor natural resource management agencies by serving as a "watch dog" for the public interest.
  • Inform the administration, Congress, state officials, media and the public about substantive environmental issues of concern to PEER members.
  • Defend and strengthen the legal rights of public employees who speak out about issues concerning natural resource management and environmental protection.
  • Provide free legal assistance if and when necessary
In yet other words - protecting government employees who want to uphold the principles that their government is no longer maintaining. The group has a webpage where you can discover much more about them, but they have also just set up their own blog: The Undercover Activist Blog. It's a great way to keep up with what's happening at Interior, NOAA, the EPA, the Park Service and more. And, AND, you too can become an Undercover Activist and support the organization by ordering a pair of the boxers pictured above.

FEATURED QUOTE

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
