An Inconvenient Truth

Long before it was fashionable, Al Gore has been preaching about the perils of global warming. He took it up as his personal crusade, parting information to anyone and everyone who cared to listen.

His dedication to the cause of educating the public and urging action on this critical issue prompted Paramount Pictures to approach Gore and feature him in a documentary called “An Inconvenient Truth”. Directed by Davis Guggenheim, the movie received three standing ovations at the Sundance Film Festival and is coming to a theater near you starting May 24th.

Naysayers -- including the Bush Administration which routinely suppresses scientists from speaking out about the issue and other scientific issues that contradict its policy -- insist that global warming isn’t real or that there are other explanations for the extreme climate conditions we are witnessing in the world today.

But the issue is no longer debatable. The evidence is damning and the larger scientific community overwhelmingly agrees: global warming is real, it’s here and we are contributing to its acceleration.

So, what can we do?

First, visit the movie’s web site. It has information about the movie and theater listings. It also has helpful and informative links to the science behind global warming, how you can take action as well as the latest news and blog on global warming.

Second, sign up for an e-mail reminder at the movie site to remind you when it opens in your area. Then watch the movie and urge everyone you know to see it. A moving image has more impact than a dozen scientific studies.

Third, take action and bring about change. Join in demanding world governments and leaders, especially the Bush Administration, to address this issue now by adopting standards that will arrest a catastrophe in the making.

Robert Louis Stevenson once said, “sooner or later, everyone sits down to a banquet of consequences”. It is not too late to turn the tide, but we must collectively act now before it's too late.

Otherwise, we will sit down to our own irreversible banquet of consequences.

FEATURED QUOTE

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."

-- Cecil Day-Lewis from Where Are The War Poets?
