Much Worry About Nothing

Last week after Bush announced that he would be sending National guard troops to the Arizona and Texas Borders, I felt a moments panic. The thought of Bush sending troops anywhere gives me a real fright, let's face it, he doesn't have a great record when it comes to armed conflict. But here I was worried about nothing, the guardsman will be there to build roads and stuff, and they won't even have guns.

Here's what Alberto Gonzales said on Face the Nation yesterday.

So they're there in a support role. For example, if you have a Guardsman who's trained in building roads, they'll be sent to the border and they will assist in building roads across along the border. If you have a National Guardsman who's trained in analysis or intelligence, they will be sent to the border and they'll be involved in analysis and intelligence. So they're there in a support role. With respect to whether or not they'll be armed, those are--those are rules of force, rules of engagement that we'll work out between the Department of Homeland Security and the Govenors.
So I'm feeling better about this deployment. They're going to help with intelligence, and in Texas, they need all the help they can get. They're going to build roads, although I thought the idea was to keep people out, so why we want to build roads so they can get in, is kind of confusing. They won't have guns, so no one will get shot for wanting to work. I hope that the people trying to cross the border don't try to speak Spanish, because the House has put a bill out there that has declared English the National Language. I'm not sure what will happen to people who are caught speaking Spanish, but there are a couple of Spanish swear words that I really enjoy using when I play golf and miss a really easy putt.

Maybe I will have to learn French.
