An Inconvenient Truth

Today I took my dad to see An Inconvenient Truth. If you haven't heard about it by now, it's the companion documentary to the book of the same name. As most of us know, Al Gore hasn't been sitting around throwing darts at pictures of the chimp. He's been busy warning the world about the dangers of Global Warming.

If you already belong to the reality based community than there probably isn't much you're going to learn from the film about global warming that you didn't already know. I can only wonder at how well it might be at convincing the non-believers. But at least it's getting the topic out in the public's mind. Anything that has the power to get people to talk about global warming also has the potential to get them to act on global warming.

The film has funny moments. At one point we are shown the capitalist's great dilemma: the economy or the environment. This choice is graphically displayed in the film as a bunch of gold bars representing the economy on one side of the scale, and the entire planet earth on the other side of the scale. Obviously not much of a choice. Sadly, most capitalists will choose the economy over the only planet we have to live on.

Overall an enjoyable and informative film, definitely a good starting point for people. The images of Mt. Kilimanjaro 30 years ago, covered in snow, in comparison with today is a graphic reminder that Global Warming is no joke. Gore did a great job presenting images that really drove the points home. Take your friends. Buy the DVD.

Or we could figure out how to fix up Mars.
