A Cease-Fire Will Help

I don't really understand how the Secretary of State can say these words:

"A cease-fire won't help."

A cease-fire might not solve the problems in the Middle East, but it would help in many ways. First off, a cease fire would stop people from dying. I can only think that that would be beneficial to nearly everyone involved, because killing people is unproductive in many ways. It makes their families angry, it creates support for the ones who are embattled. The destruction of regular routes of commerce cause grave economic damage to the region, and since we are all linked in this global economy, we are all losing money. War in this particular region has the capacity to shut down the world economy, and a cease-fire might delay it enough so that we can all stock up on food and medicine before the collapse of the world economy.

A cease fire will save lives and keep the conflict from spreading out of control.

It may be that Condi Rice thinks that it is too late to save the Middle East, and maybe that has been true for the last 6 years. The Bush Administration has done nothing to advance the peace process, and so much to aggravate it, that you have to wonder if they really do want the region to engage in all-out war. Getting nations to stop killing each other is a worthy goal, unless you have a vested interest in war. Does America benefit from war?

Ask yourself this question. If the Middle East goes up in flames, and we are unable to contain it, who profits? Energy Companies? Exxon Mobile? Condi Rice who has an oil tanker named after her? Who loses? The average American has not seen the the highest oil prices, there are more to come and if this war gets any further out of control, we will all be taking the bus.

Stop the killing. Work for peace.

No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
