Let's Veto the VetoPresident Bush has exercised his veto power for the first time, and he has done it for the legislation that promises to do the most good for not just Americans, but humanity in general, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement bill, HR 810.This veto can be overriden by Congress, but our representatives and senators need to hear from us NOW in order to ensure a sufficient number of votes for an override. A two-thirds majority of both houses will be necessary. As both houses passed the original bill, it should be possible to get this majority. A bill that 72 percent of Americans want to see passed should not be allowed a veto by one man's mistaken "ethics," "morals," or just plain ignorance. Please contact your Congress members immediately, by phone, fax or email and implore them to stand up to Bush on this issue. If you don't have the numbers at your fingertips, click the Congress.org button in our sidebar. Everyone's future thanks you. Update: A terrific editorial on this veto by Patti Davis, Does Anyone Care?, is at Newsweek online. White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said, about the impending veto, that President Bush “thinks murder is wrong.” But apparently, the destruction of fertilized eggs—flushed away as if they’re useless—doesn’t count as murder. Only using those fertilized eggs for valuable scientific research that could eventually save people’s lives counts as murder in this president’s mind. No one in this administration, with all their wordplay and posturing, has been able to dance around that stunning lack of logic. | +Save/Share | | |
