Think BiggerIn a recent post, Bruce sorts out the possibile consequences of a viable third party in this country and what that would mean to us now and in the near future. He sums it up:So, for Democrats, for labor unions, for peace activists, for women's-rights advocates, for opponents of torture, for retirees, for Latinos and African-Americans, for all the groups that currently lean Democratic even though some of us get pretty frustrated with the Democrats' timidity and corporate mentality, the question is: Are we prepared to cede the Republicans a strong plurality or majority for 15-20 years and give them a virtually free hands to start wars, slash Social Security, expand the torture and domestic spying programs, convert every federal program from disaster relief to reading programs for children to legal services for the poor into crony-capitalist goodies for their corrupt buddies, and all the rest of the things we've seen the Cheney-Bush administration do the last six years? What I see here and in most conversations I have with my friends on the Left is a failure of the imagination. Yes, I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. It's getting easier and easier to illustrate the Democratic Party's complicity in recent crimes against humanity carried out under the Bush administration. But people don't seem to know where to go from there. The Democrats are all we've got? I sure hope not. As Bruce correctly points out there is no easy way to bring a third party to the fore in this country because of the nature of our political beast. To really bring a third party to life in this country would essentially mean decades of struggle while the neo-cons continue on their merry way. But is that our only option? Hell no! We can do what people have done for centuries when faced with a brutal and reactionary government that no longer cares about its people or the consequences of its actions. We can organize and take to the streets and demand change right now! United and standing together in solidarity we can demand change. It's time to take the power back. October 5 is such a day, a day of mass resistance to the imperialists in the White House. The Democrats and Republicans don't care about us. Putting Democrats in office is not going to make a difference. Quit scaring yourself and understand that we have the power to bring this mess to an end. Please join us on October 5: The World Can't Wait! | +Save/Share | | |
