Torture legalization vote: 32 out of 44 Senate Dems oppose Cheney's torture bill; 54 out of 55 Reps support tortureGlenn Greenwald has the list of pro-torture Democrats and some comments at his Unclaimed Territory blog. The 12 Democratic disgraces include: Tom Carper (Del.), Tim Johnson (SD), Mary Landrieu (LA), Frank Lautenberg (N.J.), Joe Lieberman (CN) (of course!), Robert Menendez (N.J), Bill Nelson (FL.), Ben Nelson (Neb.), David Pryor (Ark.), Jay Rockefeller (WV), Ken Salazar (CO), and Debbie Stabenow (MI). Jim Jeffords (NH), an Independent who votes with the Democrats on organizing the Senate, also voted No on legalizing torture. One Republican, Rhode Island's Lincoln Chafee, voted No. But don't forget: If Chafee is re-elected as a Republican, he will vote with the Torture Party on organizing the next Senate, i.e., on whether the Dems or the Torture Party have the leadership of the Senate and the Committee Chairs. We can, and we must, balance our responsibilities to bring terrorists to justice, while at the same time protecting what it means to be America. To choose the rule of law over the passion of the moment takes courage. But it is the right thing to do if we are to uphold the values of equal justice and due process that are codified in our Constitution. - Sen. Christopher Dodd 09/28/06Courage was in pitifully short supply in Congress this week - and virtually non-existent among the Republican members. | +Save/Share | | |
