Hungry MouthsSome of us here at TBV have written recent posts on the world food crisis now ongoing, and today's quote on the sidebar also calls attention to this situation. It can be hard to find a consise explanatory article to help make "sense" of this crisis, but his morning's Progress Report seems to have managed to do just that. Under the headline More Hungry Mouths To Feed, the Report gives us the situation, the causes, some solutions, and most useful of all to me, a section on the role of Congress and the Farm Bill. In particular the weakness in the farm bill, also discussed on the Bill Moyers Journal program I referenced in my previous post, which lies with commodity subsidies, which go to just five crops and leave 57 percent of American farmers out in the cold.
I highly recommend a reading of this article for any who are scratching their heads in puzzlement over how all of this turmoil over food both at home and abroad can be happening now. Really though, anyone who has bought a gallon of milk, a dozen eggs, a loaf of bread, right here in their local Piggly Wiggly might be scratching their head in puzzlement over the cashier's announcement of what they owe. Progress Report won't pay your bill, but it will help you understand what is going on.
