Will It Appear Over New Orleans?Listen up gay folks:There's a lot of news concerning the gay community and Hurricane Katrina on 365Gay, The Advocate, and other gay sites. Some of these stories mention the fact that CRWXtians are starting to blame Katrina on gay and lesbian activity in New Orleans. And yes, we all know what a total load of rubbish these accusations are. But I'm beginning to see a window of opportunity for gays and lesbians here. A chance to show America that we're more that just a sex-crazed group of fanatics out for self-gratification and sexual pleasure. As you know, the Southern Decadence celebration was scheduled for this week (Aug 31 - Sep 5) in New Orleans. Obviously, the party has been canceled. But if you signed up to go and had your money returned, may I suggest you send the money you were going to spend on this celebration to a rainbow relief fund for Katrina survivors? The people at Rainbow World Fund and America's Second Harvest have set up funds to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina and your help would be deeply appreciated. The other part of my suggestion concerns the rebuilding of New Orleans. How about someone out there in the gay community setting up a Habitat for Humanity type operation which will go into New Orleans neighborhoods in a hands on effort to help clean up and rebuild. I'm sure such a project could be put together quickly that would be supported by gays and lesbians everywhere. People could take a month or so off work and go to New Orleans or another Gulf Coast city that needs help and work to rebuild a home for a family victimized by Katrina. Imagine ~ people working together for the good of all. This is a chance to show the world that gays are human, responsible, and good neighbors who care about others - gay or straight, black or white, Christian or otherwise. Remember what appeared in the sky after the greatest recorded flood of all time? The most wondrous rainbow ever. Let's DO it! | +Save/Share | | |
