I think this qualifies as obsessionEvery now and then, a story gives us a glimpse into the exclusivist mindset with which the Christian Right zealots are working: Controversies Cast Shadows Over 'End of the Spear' Christian Post 01/22/06.This piece is on the End of the Spear movie, which is about Christian missionaries. It's being promoted through churches, on the theory that marketing general-release films to churchgoers will help them tap into a market niche they haven't been winning as fully as possible. Now some fundis are objecting to the movie because one of the actors is reportedly gay. Not even that he portrays a gay character, or that the film suggests tolerance toward gays. (I don't know if it even mentions the subject.) But because the actor is gay. What's next? Boycotts of movies that hire divorced actors? How about actors who aren't active churchgoers, I hear there are a lot of those? (Ronald Reagan was one of them.) And Jewish actors, they might be subtlely trying to destroy Christianity or something with "backmasked messages" in their lines, couldn't they? And how about liberal Christians? Why should good God-fearing white folks support movies that hire bound-for-Hail Methodists or Episcopalians? My advice to these folks: don't go to the movies. | +Save/Share | | |
