The Path of PeaceI'm not sure when it happened, maybe it has always been true, that the desire for world peace is socially and politically risky. Objecting to war on the grounds that it is immoral was something only a Quaker was supposed to do, other Christian denominations were expected not only to support the killing and pay for the killing, they were expected to serve up their children as sacrifices to the great gods of war. As a child, I remember the images of antiwar protestors being beaten by the police, and I remember being taught in Catholic school that the commandment that told us not to kill carried a hidden clause that was never stated, but merely understood to say, thou shall not kill, unless you are killing godless communists. Today, the protests are not as violent, I haven't been jailed since the days of AIDS protests, and I never put myself voluntarily in the face of a cop in riot gear. It's not truly any safer these days to organize for peace, because you might just find yourself under a secret investigation by the FBI.Still though, I wonder if the threat of secret wiretapping is all that frightening. It's offensive and illegal, no question about it, but the DOJ has bungled the cases against real terrorists so badly, that they can't even get the death penalty for a guy who has confessed to being a part of the 9/11 plot. I'm not sure how successful they would be bringing cases against American citizens who are protected by the Constitution. So if you're worried about being arrested while exercising your right to assemble, I can tell you that while it's unpleasant, the chances of these incompetent Republicans getting the charges to stick, are slim to none. War is an Abomination against humanity. Peace is the way of god. Go out into your communities, write your chickenshit Democratic leaders without fear, and with the support of 70 percent of the American people. Peace is not radical, peace is not subversive, peace is Patriotic and life affirming. Don't fear the riot police. Peace is the only path to the future. | +Save/Share | | |
