The Dirty Truth About Factoids

In view of the difficulties in understanding televised news and even things stated in some blogs, I thought it a good time for a li'l English 101 stuff. It seems most people on hearing a factoid presented think that a true fact is being given. Not so, holy Joe. By definition, a factoid is:

Main Entry: fac·toid
Pronunciation: 'fak-"toid
Function: noun

1 : an invented fact believed to be true because of its appearance in print

At one time this was the only definition of a factoid. Now, however, so many people confuse the word factoid with the word fact that a second definition is now on the books:

2 : a brief and usually trivial news item
Please note that per the second definition, the factoid in question could be true where by the first defination it obiously would not be true. This is an interesting oxymoron brought about by our own stupidity in understanding the English language.

For example. If I were to list a factoid concerning myself, it might appear thus:

Factoid: Marcia Ellen enjoys playing games with strangers that requires the removal of articles of clothing as a penalty for losing until someone is naked.
Now, while there is some truth to this factoid (Marcia Ellen enjoys playing games with strangers) which gives it some credibility, the complete factoid is, however, quite untrue. I don't play strip games with strangers.

So there you have it. If you're going to spew out factoids, or you hear factoids concerning some news story, politician, or celebrity, keep in mind that factoids are not facts. Give the story or person the benefit of the doubt.

I hope you've been paying attention as there will be a short quiz on the subject tomorrow.
