Two Sides To Every DebateHey, I'm a business manager, and I'm also a liberal. In the debate on immigration, I come down on the side for immigrants, because they have proven to be great employees. I have to admit, that I try to low-ball them on starting salary, because my company and every company on the Dow Jones tries to keep it's labor costs low. That is the way we do business here in America, like it or not. If you're trying to be competitive, you have to get in line with what your competition is doing. In the business world, standard labor costs and average wage are key, we all measure ourselves by a short ruler, and the idea that paying a better wage for better performance is frowned upon in my business, even though it increases both top and bottom line performance.I try to make sure that the green card that I photo-copy is legit, I'm not an expert, but I know that social security numbers are for sale in the hood, and I try to discourage my workers from buying one that's cheap, because they will eventually get the letter from the corporate office saying that they didn't pay enough for the right to work in this country, and they will have to go back to Social Security and get it straightened out. On the liberal side, I believe that better wages produce better work, and I also tend toward a mixed society, I feel that we are better citizens of the world because of our openess to other cultures, I feel that we will be able to express ourselves in a better way by learning a different language, or a different way of doing things. The issue of states having to foot the bill for medical costs and education of people who don't contribute to the tax base, believe me, I get it. I don't live in a border state, so I'm not sure I understand the urgency to build a wall or a fence, but fences separate us from our fellow humans, they serve not only to keep others out, but to keep us in. I'm against fences. The argument from white people I've heard about the necessity to send troops to the border is that the people coming illegally over the borders are criminals, they depress wages for other Americans, and they want to sing the national anthem in a different language. Not only do they commit the offense of not speaking the native language, they rent a house accross the street and fill it with four or five families and play that un-godly salsa music all night. No one wants to live across the street from a bunch of illigal immigrants and see the property values plummet, but in Chicago, my neighbors made the best Carne Asada, and they water-proofed the deck for 20 percent of the cost that Long Fence quoted me. I learned to speak Spanish, and I taught them some English. They were good neighbors, and the mother next door, Maria Christina made this kick-ass corn tortilla that I wish I could sell in my business, because it's amazing. I admit that I don't live in a border state, I don't understand the issues that disturb those who live in California, or Arizona. But if you read this post, and you have some postitive input, I can tell you that the rest of the country views the immigration issue as racist, so if you have some rational argument, and you're not a racist, please make it here. | +Save/Share | | |
