20/20 Hindsight

Keith Olbermann interviewed former vice-president Al Gore on “Countdown” last night.

It was good to see Mr. Gore discoursing animatedly on a subject about which he is obviously passionate and well-informed. My husband made the remark, “This is the least ‘wooden’ I’ve ever seen him.” I found it almost impossible to believe that this articulate, intelligent, well-spoken gentleman had ever made a run at the office occupied for the last six years by the ignorant, bumbling, blustering idiot who currently personifies the United States of America to the rest of the world.

Which got me to thinking about the 2000 election. About where this country would be if Bush and Co. hadn’t stolen it from the rightful victor. I remember one of the right-wing’s favorite sneers after 9/11: “What do you think would have happened if Al Gore had been in the White House when we were attacked?” What, indeed? I think it’s safe to say that, at the very least, we wouldn’t be wallowing ass-deep in the quagmire of an illegal, immoral, and reprehensible struggle in Iraq. I won’t even touch upon the implications a Gore presidency would have had for the environment, or the middle class, or health care costs, or the myriad of other very important issues upon which the Bush Administration has crapped during its disastrous tenure.

In retrospect, I think we all realize that the US would have been far better off with a “wooden” president than a wooden-headed one.

Defend the bad against the worse."
